"I was lucky enough to be selected to join the first Cardi-Back programme. I have suffered from back pain for over 3 years when Neil introduced me to Cardi-Back. I attended an introduction session, where it was explained what Cardi-Back was all about. I was then invited other with other back pain suffers to attend 8 weekly sessions lasting one and a half hours. This time is spent on education, swiss ball exercises and working on the Easyline equipment within the gym. All the activities are aimed to improve fitness and reduce cardiovascular disease. There was a mixed bunch in my class, men and women with ages ranging between 40-74, but basically we were all there for the same reason....back pain.

Each week I was given and set of exercises to perform using the swiss ball. The class worked together following clear instructions form Neil Sleeman, who also provided us with written exercises which are kept in a folder for later reference at home. Exercises promoted strengthening core muscles and also improving general fitness levels. All exercise were performed at individual levels.

The Easyline equipment provided more resistance exercises along with cardio vascular exercises. Again, everyone in the class worked at their own level. We exercised in circuits moving around the different equipment/machines following instructions from Corrina James, a personal trainer.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the Cardi-Back programme and have found it most beneficial. I have recently lost my job because of my back issues and I now feel that following the exercise programme I hope to return to work again soon in the future. Neil and Corrina have encouraged me to be more active and I have taken up a membership at the gym to continue to improve my physical ability. Not only do I suffer less back pain, I also have noticed a better quality of life that had suffered and as result of my back problems. I am now able to carry out day to day activities with more ease and feel very encouraged about my future. I feel I have started to get my life back." - LG

"I would like to record my sincere thanks to all involved in the Cardi Back Clinic, particularly to Neil and Corinna, for all their enthusiasm, hard work and encouragement over these past 8 weeks. This is the first time that I have been involved in this type of therapy, and whilst being excited about it, I was quite nervous at the first session. However they soon put me at ease and with the delicate balance of theory, gym exercises and Ball exercises managed to come up with a formula which suited my needs exactly.

I owe them a great deal of gratitude, as after the first session, I decided to attempt a diet, not just because of the readings that were taken that first week, which were upsetting, but also because I got such a buzz out of the exercises and the tremendous feeling that I could actually do something to make myself fitter and have less pain. The exercises were "doable", without pain and the feeling was quite uplifting. Now at the end of the course I have a different outlook regarding exercise, I can do it, I have lost weight (just over one stone), feel fitter, less tired and my back pain is somewhat reduced – and the pain I do get is eased considerably by the use of the exercise ball.

So once again, a big thank you for all you have done; now it's up to me to continue your good work – and I really intend to do it!" - JD

" Having had problems with my lower back since I was in my teens - born with a spinal disorder - I had protected my spine, consequentally have little upper body strength. Was pleased to join the "cardi- back" programme and was very interested but initially expecting only limited success. Have been quite amazed at the improvement in my upper body strength because of the cardiovascular exercises. Educationally it has been so enlightening with each session starting with an instructional 30 minutes - we have had 6 detailed and specifically designed education sessions. Have become more confident with all exercises and now feel able to complete the programme at home. Not really in need of further social involvement but have enjoyed the company of all others in the class.

This is a really worthwhile programme run by people who really do care and will go to any lengths to help any and all members - would like it to run indefinitely !! " - MF

"Prior to beginning to work with Neil and Corrina in the programme, I suffered considerable lower back pain that was having a detrimental effect on my day to day life. I avoided certain movements and restricted my mobility in order to avoid the pain of a twinge or worse still causing a more serious injury. I was all too familiar with the walk of the constipated duck!
It was not painful all of the time but caused considerable discomfort when sitting for prolonged periods. As my job is office based and involves regular travel between offices, I sit for long periods at a time either at a desk or behind the wheel of a car.

This programme has educated me as to the structures and mechanics of my back and core and helped me understand how posture and strengthening exercises are important in maintaining a strong core and so maintaining good stability to reduce and maybe even eliminate my back pain over time. It is certainly less now and these tangible improvements encourage me to use the exercise ball and the exercises taught in class over the course of the week. I even use the ball as a chair at my desk at home and in the office! It is an important part of my well-being now.

Neil and Corrina are excellent motivators and communicators. They present the programme as a marvellous journey we can all join and not as an imposed lifestyle change. They carry you along with their boundless energy and create the conditions where the light in your head clicks on and you realise you are doing the exercises because you want to and because the programme will help you, rather than because someone is telling you too. Even when they are hard and your legs are tired.

For anyone with back pain I would recommend trying this programme. Neil and Corrina have a good history of your problems and police you (in the nicest way) throughout the session. When demonstrating they are clear at showing you the correct way, whilst suggesting an alternative to group members who maybe have a more serious problem that would make that movement difficult. All this is done in an inclusive and gentle way that alienates no individual no matter how serious their problem.

The exercises mastered here and the knowledge gained in the classroom sessions will stay with us participants for a lifetime. The clear class notes and exercise charts will always jog the memory as required.
All in all an excellent and worthwhile course that is great for getting people to regain the confidence to take control of their movements again and through these, their lives. " - AP
