John bounces back

Years of lower back trouble meant Durham man John Oliver was unable to garden and even walk without constant niggling pain but he has bounced back to fitness thanks to the Cardi-Back project.
John, of Newton Hall, Durham, said: “I had aching pain and restricted movement.  Even cutting the lawn with a lawn mower was quite painful and I’d stopped going for walks because of the ache I was getting in the back.”  So when he spotted an article in a newspaper about Cardi-Back John decided to join the project.
The Cardi-Back project is part of the Changing the Physical Activity Landscape (CPAL) programme, supported by NHS County Durham and Darlington and County Durham Sport, aiming to reduce cardiovascular disease through increasing physical activity.
John, 67, explained how the sessions comprise two elements.  “The programme strengthens the core muscles; these are the most important muscles in the body which offset any pains in the back.  Then there is also the cardio programme where you’re very gently exercising all of the muscles in the body and waking up those which had gone to sleep through lack of use.”

The grandfather of four started the weekly sessions in February and after the eight-week programme had learnt how to exercise with a Swiss Ball at home.
“The programme is absolutely superb. Now I’m able to lift up heavy pots without problems and I’ve started going for walks again.”
